Politics and controversy aside, I love Fifa World Cup. Not only do I like sports, particularly soccer, I like the crazy fans who make Canadians appear disinterested in hockey. Soccer is incredibly colourful in many ways.
The Opening Ceremony today made me smile. So many aspects of Brazilian culture and heritage on display alongside its incredible nature. From the first distinctive drumbeat to the last, Yoda was dancing on his perch, literally shaking his tail feathers. It's the same reaction he has to the animated feature, Rio. I thought it was all the birds, his people, but now I suspect it's Brazil. His joy is contagious.
Then the entire stadium sang the Brazilian national anthem and I was moved to tears.
Pride is a good thing. Joy even better. Though neither were mine today I basked in the emotions of others and was better for it.

Hockey night tonight
Another long day at work but we accomplished a fair bit and I helped a boy find books for his project about how pencils and crayons are made. No luck on the pen front.
I opted out of a night out to spend time with the family. It's important and I'm really feeling the need lately to spend as much time with my parents as possible. It's a good thing I made that decision. My dad totally ignored my breakfast announcement of evening plans and went ahead on dinner with my attendance as part of the equation. Oh well. It was steak out on the grill so no hardship for me.
An exciting night of hockey with lots of parental interaction to round out the night. My phone was buzzing throughout the game as Stashaholic and I discussed the play. My other game texting buddy was busy but Yoda cheered for her. I've never seen a parrot take such an interest in sports. He screams Wheeeee when our team scores and Eeeeek or What???? when the opposing team gets a goal. I am greatly amused by him.
In other news, I have decided to make a pair of socks for my great-aunt for Christmas. She appreciated the last pair so much it seems mean not to knit some more for her.

Halloween
Halloween. I started out dressed as a pioneer woman. Then a charwoman. Then a gypsy. Then in a fit of disgust, I put on a short 60's inspired multi-coloured circle dress that I bought this year and went as myself. Somehow, DNi thought I dressed as a pirate and left Yoda at home. WTH? Proof that he doesn't actually look at me.
It's been raining all day but I saw little Trick or Treaters out there. Not much gets between kids and their candy. We were the same way at that age.
The best thing today though, hands down, was watching Little Shop of Horrors with DNi and Yoda. The little green parrot laughed his way through the flick. I looked over to see him leaning way over in his cage to see the screen. There were times when he was laughing and we weren't. He amuses the hell out of me.
This was his favourite scene. RIP Levi Stubbs
